It is estimated approximately 650,000 (or ~1 in 50) Canadians are on anti-coagulation medication to help prevent or treat thromboembolism related to cardio-pulmonary conditions, post-op orthopedic surgery or other diseases/conditions known to increase risk of life-threatening blood clot formation. Most people likely know of a relative or friend who is either presently on, or was taking anticoagulants at one time. Anticoagulation therapy can however, sometimes be responsible for causing hemorrhagic adverse events, which may lead to functional limitations, serious complications or even death. This presentation summarizes common indications, precautions and potential complications of anticoagulant medications. It also describes how to recognize early red flag, signs & symptoms as well as conservative physiotherapy management of musculoskeletal bleeding complications related to anticoagulant usage, with the aid of two case studies.
